HOW TO CLEAN PAINTED WALLS WITHOUT DAMAGING THE PAINT

Walls collect dust, handprints, cooking grease and soot, especially during harmattan and in homes that run generators. Cleaning them the wrong way can leave shiny patches, streaks or areas where the paint has worn off. The right method is gentle and simple.
WHAT YOU NEED
A soft duster or dry microfibre cloth
Two buckets, or one bucket and a basin of clean water
Mild dish soap and warm water
A soft sponge and clean soft cloths
A dry towel
STEP BY STEP
1. Dust the wall first. Wipe from top to bottom with a dry duster or cloth. Rubbing dust with a wet cloth can turn it into mud and leave streaks.
2. Mix a mild solution. Add a small amount of dish soap to warm water. Strong chemicals are unnecessary for ordinary dirt.
3. Test a hidden spot. Try the solution on a small, low area. Allow it to dry and check that the colour and finish remain unchanged.
4. Wipe in small sections. Dip the sponge into the solution, squeeze out excess water and wipe gently. Too much water can cause problems, especially on damaged surfaces.
5. Rinse with clean water. Use a clean, damp cloth to remove soap residue and prevent streaks.
6. Dry the wall. Pat the area dry with a towel and allow it to air-dry.
DEALING WITH COMMON MARKS
Handprints and fingerprints: A mild soap solution usually works.
Kitchen grease: Use a mild dish soap solution, then rinse thoroughly.
Soot and smoke marks: Remove loose soot carefully before using a suitable cleaning method. Avoid rubbing hard because soot spreads easily.
Pencil and crayon marks: Try a soft eraser or test a mild cleaning solution on a hidden area.
WHAT TO AVOID
Scouring pads, stiff brushes and abrasive powders that can scratch paint.
Bleach and harsh chemicals that may discolour painted surfaces.
Soaking the wall with water.
Scrubbing one spot too hard.
Cleaning freshly painted walls before the paint has cured. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
KNOW YOUR PAINT FINISH
Matt paint is often more delicate and can develop shiny patches when scrubbed. Silk, satin and gloss finishes may tolerate cleaning better, depending on the product.
If a wall in a busy area gets dirty frequently, consider a washable paint finish when repainting.
WHEN CLEANING IS NOT ENOUGH
If the paint is peeling, bubbling or showing recurring black patches, the problem may not be ordinary dirt. These signs can indicate moisture, mould or failing paint. Identify the cause and repair the surface before repainting.
